Recently after makeing a first draft version of my trance remix of Saucerful Of Secrets from Ummagumma, I was happy to see that the remix was not linear and not following original track parts order. I thought that I like when things are rearranged so the original beginning is not always at the beginning in the remix.
Then, when you hear a remix of song you know very well, you may like to discover it by another entrance instead of the regular well known one. This is same as if you know a place very well and you can enter it by another way.
Other thoughts:
I am very interested in remixing a song linearly by typically taking the lead parts (vocals, guitar) and redoing all other tracks (bass, drums, pads, etc) in order to make a total conversion (as said in DOOM ;-) to trance remix. Because it's not always exciting at the end to ear the same song but packaged differently (but sometimes it's great too, see classic remixes of Depeche Mode, or obviously Frankie Goes To Hollywood), and it requires more work... and finally, since the lead parts are not perfectly extracted (some sounds remains from the background), this can't give a clear remix.
So with my means, I make what I can but I like making a remix by focussing on small parts of the song put in loop and tweaking on it, trying to find the trance sweet spot.
